Very useful when making daemons, for example:

    if ($pid < 0)

        exit;
    else { // child
    
        $sid = posix_setsid();
        
        if ($sid < 0)
            exit;
            
        for($i = 0; $i <= 60; $i++) { // do something for 5 minutes

        }
